Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes the Reds cannot be considered overwhelming favourites in their UEFA Champions League clash with Galatasaray, citing the threat posed by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
Galatasaray hold a narrow advantage heading into the decisive encounter after securing a 1–0 victory in the first leg at RAMS Park.
Despite failing to get on the scoresheet, Osimhen remained a constant attacking threat for the Yellow-Reds throughout the match.
His influence was evident when he appeared to have doubled the lead, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside by the referee.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol questioned why Liverpool are still widely viewed as favourites despite their recent struggles and the presence of Osimhen in the Galatasaray squad.
"Liverpool have just capitulated against right now the worst in the Premier League," Nicol said.
"And they 1-nil behind Galatasaray, who have a guy upfront in Osimhen, who can win any game on his own with a simple piece of magic and brilliance.
"How Liverpool can be such a big favourite after what we saw at the weekend, I don't get."
Osimhen has been one of the standout performers in this season’s UEFA Champions League, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in nine appearances for the Turkish giants.
The former African Footballer of the Year was also on target when Galatasaray defeated Liverpool earlier in the league phase, further underlining his importance to the team.
With the second leg set to take place at Anfield, Osimhen will be hoping to continue his impressive form and inspire Galatasaray to another positive result as they aim to secure a historic progression to the next round of Europe’s elite club competition.
