Birmingham City right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel has opened up about his decision to represent Nigeria ahead of England, revealing that his deep-rooted connection to his heritage and the strong sense of unity within the squad convinced him to choose the Super Eagles.
Osayi-Samuel played a prominent role in Nigeria's campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, starting six of the team’s seven matches.
His most notable display came in the high-stakes semifinal against Morocco in Rabat, where he delivered an assured defensive performance.
With Nigeria adopting a disciplined, defence-first approach, the Super Eagles held the Atlas Lions at bay for 120 minutes before eventually bowing out on penalties.
Born in Okija to Nigerian parents, Osayi-Samuel was also eligible to represent England, having spent fourteen years living there.
He made his competitive senior debut for Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau under then head coach José Peseiro, a cap-tying appearance that formally sealed his international allegiance.
For many dual-national footballers, the choice of which country to represent is complex, shaped by culture, opportunity, and personal values, with Nigeria often emerging as the natural first choice when a second nation is no longer feasible.
When asked if he would have played for England had the opportunity arisen, Osayi-Samuel reflected on his upbringing and cultural influences.
"My friends have asked me this question as well. For me, because I was so heavily influenced by my country — with my dad and mum immersing me in Nigerian culture, going to Nigerian weddings, enjoying the food and everything — playing in England means you start to play with players who represent their countries, and you start to see the value of playing for England," Osayi-Samuel said on OmaSportsTV.
"But in terms of playing football, some people might say playing for England is better, but you don’t get the other side of it. In terms of the togetherness and the vibes, I don’t think you would see that playing for England.
"Of course, football comes first. Look at Fulham — the way Bassey, Alex and Samuel joke around comes from the vibes and how much they are enjoying it. I can tell that every single day they are having fun.
"And when you come to the Nigeria setup, that’s exactly how it is — everyone is having fun. You never see any negativity; even the players who don’t play are smiling and looking forward to the game and training. This is one of the reasons I will always choose Nigeria first."
Osayi-Samuel started out as a winger, but his move to right-back opened the door to an opportunity that would shape his career with Nigeria
"I don’t know if most people know this, but I started as a winger — right wing, left wing. It was when I signed for Fenerbahçe that they wanted me to play at right-back. At first, I did not enjoy it, but eventually I began to play more in that position and learn more about it," Osayi-Samuel added.
"But then I had the opportunity to play for Nigeria — that's when I got called up. So I thought, if this is my way in, I would take it, because I've always wanted to play for Nigeria. I've always said that from a young age.
"Nigeria is a country my mum and dad are very proud of, and I'm proud of it as well. For me to receive a call-up was an honour.
"When I got the call asking whether I was interested in playing as a right-back, I was absolutely happy. That’s one of the main reasons I took the position seriously, because it was an opportunity for me to play right-back for both my club and my country. Like I said, I’ve never looked back."
Osayi‑Samuel's choice to don the green and white extended far beyond football as he was guided by his family ties.
"It’s the fact that my mum and dad were so committed to getting me involved in learning about Nigerian culture and the food — I’ve always had that from a young age. When I was in Spain, it was the same thing.
"Coming to England, of course, you start to learn more and play for an English team, and you become more involved in the England setup. But in my head, I always wanted to play for Nigeria.
"There are so many family friends and relatives in Nigeria — I don’t even know most of them, but my mum and dad do. Every single time, they tell me that I have a lot of family back home who are trying to support me.
"Tournaments like Afcon are a way for me to give something back to them. Even after this tournament, the amount of love and messages I’ve received from people back home has been incredible.
"I’ve even started to meet people I hadn’t met before because of this tournament, and those are the things I enjoy and love. This is one of the reasons I will always want to play for Nigeria."
The 28-year-old Osayi-Samuel has earned 32 caps for the Super Eagles since making his international debut in a high profile friendly against Portugal.
