Umar Sadiq returned to Real Sociedad’s starting lineup in their La Liga clash against Villarreal at the Reale Arena.
The Nigerian striker’s inclusion drew mixed reactions, with some fans applauding his effort while others expressed their disapproval.
The match ended in a dramatic last-minute victory for Villarreal, with Moleiro scoring the decisive goal.
With several attacking players unavailable, Real Sociedad coach Sergio Francisco opted to start Sadiq as the team’s number 9.
Although the striker was not at his best, he remained active throughout the game, running tirelessly and showing determination in every play.
Addressing Sadiq’s performance after the match, Francisco highlighted the striker’s commitment.
“Sadiq didn’t have an easy match; we’ve been dealing with a lot of issues, gradually integrating him into the group dynamic,” he said, as quoted by Estadio Deportivo.
The coach added: “Three months ago, starting him was unthinkable. He gave his all, perhaps he didn’t participate much, but it wasn’t an easy situation.”
Francisco further emphasized the importance of Sadiq’s contribution. “Even so, he helped us, he ran a lot, and we need everyone,” he stated.
Sadiq’s involvement surprised a section of the fans, who applauded his every move, including his substitution in the 56th minute for Ander Barrenetxea, shortly before Villarreal scored.
Despite leaving the pitch frustrated at not being able to influence the result, Sadiq was recognized by supporters for his effort.
