'We are delighted' - Austria coach excited after midfielder on Chelle's radar chose Das Team over Super Eagles

Austria national team coach  Ralf Rangnick has expressed his delight at the decision of Carney Chukwuemeka to commit his international future to Das Team over Nigeria's Super Eagles, England's Three Lions and France's Les Bleus.

A former England youth international, the Aston Villa academy product is no longer eligible to represent Nigeria after Fifa approved his request to change association on March 9.

Chukwuemeka could make his senior debut for Austria as early as next week when they face Ghana's Black Stars in a pre-World Cup friendly.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder was born in Eisenstadt but relocated to Northampton, England as a toddler with his family, who are originally from Nigeria.

Before switching allegiance at senior level, he represented England across multiple youth categories, earning caps at U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels.

Although he had been on the radar of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, the quad-national player opted for Austria following Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Commenting on Chukwuemeka and Paul Wanner's decision to represent Austria at senior level, Rangnick was quoted as saying by Sky Sport: "We are delighted that they have chosen us.

"During the training course, they now have the opportunity to recommend themselves for the World Cup. Looking ahead to the next ten to twelve years, I am absolutely convinced that they will help us."

Chukwuemeka is not the only player of Nigerian heritage included in Austria's squad for the March internationals as Real Madrid defender David Alaba and former Super Eagles invitee Tobias Lawal have also earned call-ups.
