2025 Afconq Nigeria v Benin: Three key Cheetahs players Super Eagles must be wary of

The Super Eagles are gearing up for a crucial clash against Benin on Saturday in Uyo, as they seek to bounce back from a challenging June window.

Nigeria's performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers left much to be desired, with the team failing to secure victories in their matches.

This puts their World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy.

The Super Eagles, fresh off a near-miss in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Abidjan earlier this year, are determined to start their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on a high note.

Their first step in this quest begins with the home fixture against Benin.

Benin, who emerged victorious in their last encounter with Nigeria in June, will present a formidable challenge.

As the Super Eagles aim for revenge and strive for their fourth AFCON title, they must be wary of three key Benin players who could turn the game in their favour.

Steve Mounié

Steve Mounié, born in Parakou, is a veteran striker known for his clinical finishing and aerial prowess.

The 29-year-old Augsburg forward scored in Benin's 2-1 victory over Nigeria in their previous match, making him a significant threat.

Mounié's ability to score from set pieces and his knack for positioning will be crucial for Benin as they aim to exploit any defensive lapses from Nigeria.

With 2 goals in 4 World Cup qualifiers and 17 international goals in 53 appearances, he remains a key player to watch.

Jodel Dossou

Jodel Dossou, a 32-year-old attacking midfielder, brings creativity and technical skill to the Benin squad.

Known for his dribbling, link-up play, and pressing ability, Dossou has been a constant threat in attack.

His contributions include 1 goal and 2 assists in 4 World Cup qualifiers.

With a debut in 2013 and 10 international goals in 63 appearances, his performance against Nigeria in June showcased his potential to make a significant impact once again.

Cédric Hountondji

In defense, Cédric Hountondji is a key figure for Benin.

The 30-year-old center-back is known for his leadership, organizational skills, and ability to disrupt opposition attacks.

Hountondji's defensive contributions have been notable, with Benin conceding only 4 goals in their last five games and keeping two clean sheets.

His presence will be crucial in containing Nigeria's attacking threats, including Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho.

As the Super Eagles prepare for this critical match, they must be vigilant against these Benin players to secure a positive result and set the stage for their AFCON campaign.

The match kicks off at 5 p.m. in Uyo, and Nigeria will be hoping for a strong performance to kickstart their road to AFCON glory.
