'We've seen what he's capable of' - Arsenal icon raises concerns over Tottenham's use of Solanke
Published: September 17, 2024Arsenal icon Ian Wright has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are using record signing Dominic Solanke wrongly.
The North London side record signing has struggled to settle down at the club, though he has only played two games, and he hasn't been helped by the club's poor start to the season.
He has been subjected to a lot of criticism for his performance against Arsenal on match day four of the Premier League, with Manchester United legend Gary Neville being one of his critics.
The Red Devils legend criticized the Anglo-Nigerian striker for a missed opportunity in the first half of the game as Spurs suffered their second loss of the campaign.
Wright has leapt to the defence of the Cobham Academy product, which he feels is being used wrongly by Ange Postecoglou's side.
"What I think with Dominic Solanke is that he’s done the work. He left Chelsea, went to Liverpool, went to Bournemouth, he’s not scored copious amounts of goals, but we’ve seen what he’s capable of,” he told Kelly and Wright Show via TBR.
"He should be in that phase in his mind where he’s thinking ‘right I’m going to go there.’ Because his link up play and hold-up play and running channels is very good.
"He could give Spurs a different option, they can play up to him and go long, he can give them options other people can’t and I can’t understand why they’re not making him focus on that so that when the chances come he’s more relaxed about it rather than feeling at the moment he’s in there predominantly to score goals
The criticism may not stop anytime soon if Solanke doesn't start scoring soon and Tottenham keep failing to churn out results.
The 27-year-old has a good chance to get his first goal of the season when Spurs face Coventry City in the third round of the Carabao Cup tomorrow.
Tottenham's next Premier League fixture is up against Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
