Ex-Fenerbahce midfielder expects Icardi-Osimhen partnership to flourish like former Besiktas duo
Published: October 08, 2024
Former Fenerbahçe midfielder Rıdvan Dilmen has predicted that the partnership of Victor Osimhen and Mauro Icardi will blossom like that of the retired Turkish pair of Beşiktaş, Sergen Yalçın and Tümer Metin.
The burning question upon Osimhen's arrival at Galatasaray was how Okan Buruk was going to deploy the Nigerian striker and Icardi who had helped the club scoop the Süper Lig title in the past two seasons.
The Lions manager then confirmed that the two strikers were going to play together and has done that on one occasion, which was the Süper Lig clash with Kasımpaşa, but unfortunately, the Nigerian striker got injured in the game.
Consequently, Icardi has been spearheading the attack alone in the past two games despite Buruk having the opportunity to pair him with Mitchy Batsuayi.
Speaking on the partnership of the Osimhen and the Argentina international, Dilmen stated that the duo's partnership could be as good as that of Yalçın and Metin.
"The urban legend of playing together came from Tümer and Sergen. It was said, 'Will Tümer and Sergen play together?' They played together," Rıdvan Dilmen told HT Spor via Ajansspor.
"They played very well. In fact, it became a symbol in the championship match, saying 'Tümer gave, Sergen scored'."
Yalçın and Metin played for Beşiktaş for four consecutive seasons and helped the club win the league title on one occasion.
Buruk will be hoping Osimhen and Icardi can replicate the same as Galatasaray seek to win the Süper Lig title for the third consecutive season.
